Alternative to Tearing Down Abravanel Hall
This morning on Radio West, the fate of Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City, Utah was discussed. Doug Fabrizio interviewed four of the key players. It is definitely worth a listen. Notably, Mike Maughn of Smith Entertainment Group refused over and over to state SEG’s preferences, leaving it all in the hands of Salt Lake County, particularly Mayor Jenny Wilson. Hmm…
David Porter, violinist with the Utah Symphony and spokesman for orchestra, also referred to this alternative plan, generated through my discussions with some of the players. It calls for a creating a second lobby (the Alley Lobby?) and possibly a wine bar, at the rear Abravanel Hall, A new pedestrian promenade, envisioned by all as a connection through the block, would inflect at the lobby. The Alley Lobby entrance would be a glamorous marker for Abravanel Hall, visible from the new Delta Center east entrance. Everyone gets what they want: Abravanel Hall can be sensitively renovated, and The new Promenade now has TWO points that bookend the district. Here is a diagram:
